Here’s how to share screen on Skype

BI India Bureau | Mar 5, 2019, 03.33PM IST

While chatting on Skype, you might come across the need to show something on your computer.

You can do this by screen sharing. Irrespective of which version of Skype you are running, here is a step by step process of how to share Skype screen.

Microsoft offers a handful of versions of Skype for different platforms. Here we will focus on the two most common versions of Skype used on PC namely “Classic Desktop” app, and the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) Skype app.

Sharing Skype screen on Classic Desktop app

While running an OS different from Windows 10 or for some reason if you do not want to use the UWP version of Skype, you might run the Desktop App. Here are the steps to share Skype screen on Skype classic desktop app.

In the top right hand corner of the Skype window, you will find the phone icon. Click on it and start a call with someone in your contacts list.

On the call screen, click on the “+” icon to display additional call options.

Select “Share screens.”

You will see a screen share window which will let you choose the display you want to share. If you have only one option, your job is straight forward. If you have multiple screens, choose which one you want your friend to see and then press ‘Start’.

Now you are already sharing your screen. You will see a small red line around the border of your screen to let you know what is happening. On the right hand side of the Skype window, you will see a small window letting you know what your friend is seeing.

To stop sharing the screen, click on the central “+” icon. Then click “Stop Sharing.”

Sharing Skype screen on UWP app

UWP or the Universal Windows Platform version of the Skype is the latest version of Skype. Though the screen sharing is done on this in the same way you did on the classic desktop version, you might want to solve the confusion since the interface will look a bit different.

In the top right hand corner of the Skype window, you will find the phone icon. Click on it and start a call with someone in your contacts list.

When the call is connected, click on the “…” icon you will find on the bottom row and choose “Share screen” from the menu. If you also wish to share the sound output of your computer, click “Share screen and sounds.”

If you have multiple displays, you will have to choose which one you wish to share and then click on ‘OK’. If not, just click on to start sharing.

If everything has gone right, you would have been already sharing the screen with your contact you are talking to. To check how the sharing is going on, you can ask them. You can also do this by looking at the “Sharing Desktop” indicator you will see in the bottom right-hand corner.

To stop sharing the screen, just hang up the call. If you want to continue the call alone, press the “…” icon once again and choose “Stop Sharing.”
